What HRV can and cannot tell you

HRV describes the variation in time between heartbeats. It can add useful context to recovery when it is measured consistently and interpreted alongside sleep, resting heart rate, training load, illness, travel, alcohol, and how you feel.

HRV cannot diagnose the cause of fatigue or provide a direct score of vagus nerve health. Your personal trend is more useful than a universal target.

Why measurement conditions matter

Timing, posture, breathing, sensor type, and the metric used by your device can all affect the result. Compare readings from the same device under similar conditions.

Why your HRV may be lower than usual

A lower reading does not always mean something is wrong. HRV can shift after hard training, disrupted sleep, alcohol, travel, illness, dehydration, emotional strain, a late meal, or a change in measurement conditions.

Compare the reading with your recent context. One low day is usually less informative than a repeated change across several days.
