A PRACTICAL HRV RECOVERY GUIDE

How to improve HRV through better daily recovery

HRV is personal. Supporting it is less about chasing a universal number and more about building recovery habits you can repeat.

Measure consistently, review your own baseline, and give changes enough time to appear. Luna Plus can support this process, but it does not replace sleep, movement, nutrition, or medical care.

THE SHORT ANSWER

How to support a healthier personal HRV trend

Start with the conditions you can repeat. Compare your readings with your own baseline and review the trend across two to four weeks.

Recovery priority 01

Priority

Measurement

What to do
Use the same device under similar conditions.
Why it matters
Device, timing, posture, and breathing can change the result.
Recovery priority 02

Priority

Sleep

What to do
Keep sleep and wake times relatively consistent.
Why it matters
Disrupted or insufficient sleep may affect recovery.
Recovery priority 03

Priority

Training

What to do
Allow more recovery after unusually hard sessions.
Why it matters
High training load can temporarily lower HRV.
Recovery priority 04

Priority

Alcohol

What to do
Reduce alcohol, especially close to bedtime.
Why it matters
Alcohol may affect sleep quality and overnight HRV.
Recovery priority 05

Priority

Daily strain

What to do
Use a calming practice you can repeat.
Why it matters
Mental and physical strain can influence autonomic activity.

Trend review

What to do
Review two to four weeks together.
Why it matters
One unusually high or low reading rarely explains recovery.

UNDERSTAND THE SIGNAL

What HRV can and cannot tell you

HRV describes the variation in time between heartbeats. It can add useful context to recovery when it is measured consistently and interpreted alongside sleep, resting heart rate, training load, illness, travel, alcohol, and how you feel.

HRV cannot diagnose the cause of fatigue or provide a direct score of vagus nerve health. Your personal trend is more useful than a universal target.

Why measurement conditions matter

Timing, posture, breathing, sensor type, and the metric used by your device can all affect the result. Compare readings from the same device under similar conditions.

App screens are illustrative. Readings and individual responses vary.

WHY HRV CHANGES

Why your HRV may be lower than usual

A lower reading does not always mean something is wrong. HRV can shift after hard training, disrupted sleep, alcohol, travel, illness, dehydration, emotional strain, a late meal, or a change in measurement conditions.

Compare the reading with your recent context. One low day is usually less informative than a repeated change across several days.

How to respond without overreacting

Use HRV as one signal within a wider recovery picture. The pattern matters more than the best or worst number.

Runner during training Read the signal alongside training and recovery
One low reading

What it may mean: Normal variation or measurement noise.

What to do: Continue your normal routine and review the next few days.

Several lower readings

What it may mean: Recovery demand may be higher than usual.

What to do: Review sleep, training, alcohol, illness, travel, and daily strain.

A gradual upward trend

What it may mean: Your current habits may be supporting your baseline.

What to do: Keep the routine consistent without chasing a higher number every day.

An unusually high spike

What it may mean: It does not automatically mean full recovery.

What to do: Check measurement quality and compare it with other signals.

HRV cannot diagnose illness, fatigue, or autonomic dysfunction. Persistent, severe, or unexplained symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

START WITH A BASELINE

A practical two-week HRV plan

Use the first two weeks to reduce measurement noise and build a routine you can repeat. The goal is to understand your pattern, not force a particular number.

Days 1 to 3

Establish a baseline

Measure under similar conditions and record how you feel.

Days 4 to 7

Improve consistency

Keep measurement timing and your core recovery habits as steady as practical.

Week 2

Repeat the routine

Continue your chosen recovery practice without reacting to every reading.

End of week 2

Review the pattern

Compare HRV with sleep, training, resting heart rate, and how you feel.
